Canyon de Chelly, AZ

Snow in Summer?

This is my third time visiting Canyon de Chelly. In the previous two trips I just drove along the top of the canyon. This time we took a Jeep tour at the bottom. The powerful jeep ran through the muddy wash without any problem. By taking the tour, I was able to appreciate the beautiful patterns of the rocks within a close distance. The white dots in the above picture have nothing to do with snowing. Those are plants spread by the wind.

The pictures below show the ruins at the bottom of the North Rim of the canyon. You can tell that those ancient natives were cliff dwellers. In the last picture of this page, the openings in the house are doors, not windows. Those residents had to climb in and out, and you might wonder why they created such inconvenience. Actually, this design was intended to keep the children inside the house for safety.
